چکیده

Geospatial information is used in emergency management centers, architectural bureaus, environmental protection offices and daily life. Not only are trained experts using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) but novices, e.g. government employees, rescue workers and the general public, also use GIS. Despite the success of various GIS applications, their current use and usability is still constrained by overly complex user interfaces. While keyboard and command line shortcuts can make use of GIS applications more efficient for expert users, often some functions can only be accessed through repetitive menu and wizard tool usage. These functions are “hidden” for novice users, which remain tethered by the WIMP (windows, icons, menus, pointers) model of human computer interaction. Another, more often overlooked limitation of current GIS interfaces is that GIS user interfaces are designed for single-user interaction and thus do not support aspects of collaborative group work [1].

Gesture and Speech-Based Maps to Support Use of GIS for Crisis Management: A User Study

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) have the potential to provide critical support during crisis situations. Unfortunately, most GIS require expert knowledge to operate and do not support collaboration between decision makers. A human-centered systems approach was used to develop the prototype of a multimodal, dialog-assisted visual environment for geoinformation (DAVE_G) that will support col...

Multi-Modal 3D Geographical Information Systems with Haptic Interface

The objective of the research reported here is to develop a Multimodal 3D Geographical Information Systems (GIS) with haptic interface. In 3D environments, the complex spatial relationship between the entities and the influence of the light and shadow make operations of objects difficult and inefficient. Haptic interaction is then considered as an effective auxiliary method. We studied the feas...

SOLVING BEST PATH PROBLEM ON MULTIMODAL TRANSPORTATION NETWORKS WITH FUZZY COSTS

Numerous algorithms have been proposed to solve the shortest-pathproblem; many of them consider a single-mode network and crispcosts. Other attempts have addressed the problem of fuzzy costs ina single-mode network, the so-called fuzzy shortest-path problem(FSPP). The main contribution of the present work is to solve theoptimum path problem in a multimodal transportation network, inwhich the co...

Towards Multimodal Mobile GIS for the Elderly

Information technology can play an important role in helping the elderly to live full, healthy and independent lives. However, elders are often overlooked as a potential user group of many technologies. In particular, we are concerned with the lack of GIS applications which might be useful to the elderly population. The main underlying reasons which make it difficult to design usable applicatio...

Human-GIS Interaction Issues in Crisis Response

Geospatial information systems (GIS) provide a central infrastructure for computer supported crisis management in terms of database, analytical models and visualization tools, but the user interfaces of such systems are still hard to use, and do not address the special needs of crisis managers who often work in teams and make judgments and decisions under stress. This paper articulates the over...
